The nearest airport to Cogne is Turin International Airport, known locally as Torino or Turin-Caselle. The airport is actually located some way out of the city of Turin; about 16 km to the north. There is no railway station at Cogne and the only way to get from the airport directly to the town is via road, using a hire car, a taxi or a local bus service. The road journey from the airport to Cogne is a distance of around 144 km and takes just under two hours. The distance as the crow flies is far shorter but Cogne lies on the northern side of the Gran Paradiso National Park which does not have roads going through it.
Hiring a car and driving from Turin Airport to Cogne
Several hire car companies have offices and desks at Turin Airport and these are located in the Arrivals area and in the multi-storey car park, providing services for tourists. These include the large, international brands of Avis, Hertz, Budget, Dollar, Firefly, Enterprise and Sixt as well as the Italian and local hire car providers Maggiore, Auto Europa, Europcar and LocautoRent. Hire cars can be booked in advance or on the day when you arrive. On leaving the airport, drivers must first head south, away from Cogne, to join the A5 autostrada that heads north towards Aosta. Here the road curves round towards the south again and goes along the edge of the Gran Paradiso Park until it reaches Cogne. The road is very steep and mountainous in places and during the winter months it is necessary to use snow chains and to take great care when navigating the mountain roads.
Travelling to Cogne by bus via Aosta
A bus runs twice daily from the Arrivals level on the ground floor of Turin Airport to Aosta, which is about 27 km from Cogne. This service is operated by the SAVDA bus company with a journey to Aosta that takes around 1.5 hours and costs around 7 Euros for a one-way ticket. The bus terminates at Aosta bus station, from where there are local buses that service the most popular villages in the valleys of Gran Paradiso, including Cogne.
Travelling to Aosta by train
Another option is to use one of the public transport links from the airport to Turin Railway Station and catch a train to Aosta, from where you can travel to Cogne via road using buses or taxis. There is an hourly train service from Torino Porta Susa railway station to Aosta, a journey which takes around 4 hours. Once in Aosta, there is a Line 17 bus that goes directly to Cogne.
Several companies, such as Shuttle Direct and AlpLine, operate a private transfer service from Turin Airport to surrounding towns and villages. This can either be exclusive, using a private vehicle with a driver who meets you personally at the airport and drives you to Cogne with a door to door service, or using a shared shuttle bus that may drop off other people on the way. Shared shuttle transfers usually have a prearranged meeting place at the airport. Both private and shared transfers need to be arranged in advance and cannot be boarded at the airport without prior booking.
Turin Airport operates a car rental service within the terminal, CTA Consorzio Torinese Autoservizi (Airport Taxi Company), which offers vehicles with drivers. These are available 24 hours a day and can be booked directly at the airport at a desk in the Arrivals lounge. As well as private transfers, they offer special mountain car-pooling services. This is an economic way to reach Cogne for those who are happy to share a car with others and has an individual fixed prize of £60 from Turin Airport to each person's hotel in Cogne. This service only runs with a minimum of four passengers. It can be booked via phone with a free phone number within Italy (848 788711) or a paid number (39 011 9963090).
There is a taxi rank outside the airport, to the left of the exit. There is usually a queue of taxis readily available, but in case a taxi needs to be called, two of the larger local taxi companies are Pronto Taxi, tel 39 0115737 and Radio Taxi, tel 39 011 5730. Taking a taxi from the rank all the way from the airport from Cogne will be an expensive travel option, however, and it will be cheaper to prebook a transfer or use a taxi to get to Turin bus station or train station for onward travel to Cogne.
